Lest you think we haven’t been keeping busy, it’s my sincerest pleasure to let y’all know that we finished recording our track for the upcoming Friends In Bellwoods compilation album a few days ago. It’s a Timber Timbre cover, but I’ll leave it up to your imaginations to figure out which one. Hint – the title of this blog post? The comp itself is coming out this summer on (where else?) Out Of This Spark.

Big thanks to Jamie Bunton of Ohbijou fame for pressing all the right buttons on this one. Here’s an artistically blurred photo he snapped during a break in the session. Before I sign off, I wanted to mention two things as well.

Thing #1. Although Kyle is pictured in this photo, his physical self is actually in Europe, where he’s touring with Forest City Lovers. Check their website for updates.

Thing #2. You’d be forgiven for thinking that instead of recording, we were actually partaking in some sort of strange, basement library session. In actual fact, the three of us are totally engrossed in brand new copies of a zine that our friend Thomas DiNinno from the band Mt. Royal put together recently. It’s called Fan Club and it features beautiful illustrations of some of Canada’s top indie bands, alongside a selection of songs that the band members have compiled as a sort of imaginary mixtape. Band secret – Kyle actually picked all of our songs. Don’t tell.

Spring has sprung,

As young(er) suburbanites growing up pre-Internet, pre-blog, pre-whatever, and smack in the middle of the 905, one of our only real connections to the music scene was through the musings of journalist Ben Rayner in the Entertainment section of the Toronto Star. Whether profiling the sadly missed Barmitzvah Brothers or reviewing something by the Cons, Mr. Rayner always came correct.

So when my Mom called and woke me out of bed this morning to let me know that we had made the print edition of the Star (as well as the web version which you can check out here) my first thought was that my 18 year old self would have been a pretty happy camper today. Not to say that my 23 year old self isn’t happy, either. You know what I mean.

Thanks, Ben!
